This beautiful Zulu telephone wire basket combines traditional skills with modern materials. It is approximately 1 1/2" deep by 8" in diameter, and features a blue and green swirl pattern. This basket has rigid walls, is highly durable, and can be cleaned in warm, soapy water. If you purchase it you will receive the precise one seen in the image. It is handmade in South Africa.
Zulu wire baskets are usually woven by men because of the strength required to achieve the tight weave. They are woven from the rim down to the bottom, and a bowl or plate is used as a form to maintain symmetry during the weaving process. Originally recycled wire was used, but now the weavers usually use new wire that is custom manufactured to meet the requirements for color, quality, and gauge.
