To clean or re-shape your Bolga basket, simply wet it with cool water, clean and shape it as needed (use mild soap only and avoid wetting the leather), and allow it to air dry. You should wet the basket about once a year to hydrate the straw and keep it supple.
This basket was made in the Yikene community in the Bolgatanga region of Ghana, in West Africa. Its shape helps prevent objects from falling out, and its wide, round bottom gives it a large capacity. Yikene baskets are traditionally used for taking produce and other goods to and from markets. They are a subset of Bolga baskets, which are woven throughout the Bolgatanga area in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.
About the brand: African Market Baskets is a small business located in Boulder, Colorado that works closely with weavers to ensure fair conditions and wages, as well as high quality products. It is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and Green America, and donates 10% of its profit to Every Basket Helps, a non-profit working to alleviate poverty in northern Ghana.
